Regional Digest: Scot Wenzel returning to Newington High to coach boys basketball

Scot Wenzel is returning to Newington High School as boys basketball coach after coaching at Plainville High the past two seasons, Newington athletic director Christopher Meyers announced Monday. Wenzel previously coached the Newington boys from 2003-2017 going 187-122.

Wenzel, a physical education teacher at Plainville High, won four CCC championships at Newington and guided the team to the CIAC Class L semifinals in 2016.

Egan named Sacred Heart baseball coach: Pat Egan has been hired as baseball coach at Sacred Heart University, athletic director Judy Ann Riccio announced. Egan spent the previous eight years as assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator for Quinnipiac. Under Egan’s leadership with the Quinnipiac pitchers, the Bobcats have had three starting pitchers taken in the MLB draft. Tom Jankins was drafted in the 13th round by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2016. The following year, Robbie Hitt was chosen in the 24th round, again by the Brewers, while Tyler Poulin was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 29th round of the 2019 draft. Egan helped Quinnipiac to the 2019 NCAA tournament, the program’s first since 2005, when Egan was a sophomore pitcher. ... After more than two decades on the sideline for Sacred Heart University soccer, longtime coach Joe Barroso has announced his retirement. Barroso got his start at Sacred Heart in 1992 as the head coach of the women’s program. He returned to the women’s team in 2000 as the athletic department transitioned to Division I, then later took over as the men’s head coach in 2005.

Yard Goats lose third in a row: Michael Toglia hit his 23rd homer of the season to give the Yard Goats the lead in the second inning, but the Fightin Phils came away with a 6-3 victory Sunday night in the finale of a six-game set in Reading, Pa. Reading won the final three games to take the series, 4-2. After falling behind 3-1, the Yard Goats tied it in the sixth on a two-run single by Isaac Collins. Reading regained the lead in the seventh. Simon Muzziotti led off with a single and advanced to third on Wendell Rijo’s double. With one out, the Yard Goats intentionally walked Aldrem Corredor to load the bases. A strikeout made two outs, but Jack Conley followed with a walk to force in a run. Jonathan Guzman reached on a fielding error and another run scored to give the Phils a two-run lead. Reading made it 6-3 in the eighth when Muzziotti scored on a single by Jhailyn Ortiz. Yard Goats starter Mitchell Kilkenny gave up six hits and two runs in four innings, walking one and striking out two. Hartford next travels to Bridgewater Township, N.J., to open a six-game series against the Somerset Patriots on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
